What Are Aspects?
Aspects are the angular relationships between planets in a birth chart. They show how different parts of your psyche interact — where energies flow easily, where they clash, and where growth is catalyzed. Measured in degrees along the zodiac wheel, aspects are the grammar that turns a list of planetary placements into a living story.
The Major Aspects
Conjunction (0°) — Two planets merge their energies. This is the most intense aspect, amplifying whatever it touches. A conjunction can be harmonious or challenging depending on the planets involved, but it always creates a focal point in the chart.
Opposition (180°) — Planets are in direct tension, reflecting each other across the chart. Oppositions create a see-saw dynamic — you feel pulled between two poles. The key is integration: neither side is wrong, and the growth lies in holding both.
Trine (120°) — Planets flow with natural harmony. Trines indicate ease and talent — energy moves effortlessly between the two realms. The shadow of a trine is taking gifts for granted; growth requires conscious activation.
Square (90°) — Planets are in friction, creating tension and motivation. Squares are the engine of growth in a chart. They feel uncomfortable but drive you to act, change, and overcome. No chart is without them — they are where the work happens.
Sextile (60°) — Planets work together with opportunity. A sextile is like a trine's milder cousin — it offers potential rather than automatic flow. It requires conscious effort to activate but rewards that effort generously.
Minor Aspects
Quincunx (150°) — Awkward, frictional adjustment. Quincunx planets don't understand each other and require constant recalibration. Health and daily life often reflect this aspect's unease.
Semisextile (30°) — A subtle, uncomfortable tension that creates a low-grade urge to integrate two different signs.
Sesquiquadrate (135°) — A frustration aspect, intensifying the energy of a square. It creates chronic irritation and persistent pressure.
Orbs
Aspects are not exact — they operate within a range called an orb. Most astrologers use an orb of 8–10° for major aspects (conjunction, opposition, trine, square) and 3–4° for minor aspects. The tighter the orb, the more powerful the aspect.
Putting Aspects to Work
Aspects tell the story your chart is trying to live. A Venus trine Neptune suggests effortless artistic sensitivity; a Venus square Saturn suggests difficulty in love that matures over time. The planets and signs give you the ingredients — aspects show you what happens when you put them together.
